The Ongar Juniors Girls U15 team has made history by reaching the Essex Under 15’s Girls Cup, a remarkable achievement for Ongar’s first ever girls’ football squad. Since their formation in 2021 as part of the club’s Wildcats programme, this group of talented young players has become a beacon of community pride and sporting progress in Ongar.
A Journey Built on Teamwork and Passion
From humble beginnings, the team has grown into one of the top squads in the county. Their journey to the final has been nothing short of inspiring. After receiving a bye in the first round, the girls delivered a powerful 9-1 win against Lawford Junior Girls U15 Lionesses, with Isla Sutton-Mckeon scoring a hat-trick. They then overcame Buckhurst Hill Girls U15 Lionesses 4-1 in the quarter-finals, with another hat-trick from Emily-Rose Hunt. In the semi-final, the team secured a 3-0 victory over Hutton Girls U15 Sharks, thanks to yet another hat-trick by Emily-Rose.
Meet the Pioneers
The Ongar Juniors Girls U15 squad is a blend of original Wildcats and new signings, all united by their passion for football and teamwork. The leadership group, including captain Gabby Goodwin and vice captain Isla Sutton-Mckeon, sets the tone both on and off the pitch. Players like Brooke Hurry (goalkeeper), Poppy Taylor-Smith, Rose Alleson, and Arabella Ponsford (defenders), and midfielders such as Ava Nolan, Zoe Manly, and Chloe Sapsford, have each brought their unique strengths to the team. The squad’s attacking force, led by Emily-Rose Hunt and Summer Miller, has been key to their success.
More Than Just a Team
Ongar Juniors is the only grassroots football club in Ongar, a town of 7,000, and is built on community values. The girls’ team has been a trailblazer for female football in the area, with several players progressing to academy levels and others balancing football with school and other commitments. The club’s ethos, football as a means to inspire, unite, and develop young people, shines through in everything this team does.
Looking Ahead
Reaching the County Cup Final is a testament to the dedication of the players, coaches, and supporters. With dreams of eventually forming Ongar’s first women’s team, the U15 girls are inspiring the next generation and proving that with teamwork and determination, anything is possible.
